Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has cautioned religious leaders against criticizing and denouncing the government. She issued this warning during the opening ceremony of a four-day International Conference organized by the African Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI) in Abuja.
The event, themed “Value-based Leadership Model for Africa,” brought together prominent leaders from Africa, Europe, and global Christian communities.
Represented by Princess Gloria Akobundu, the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, Mrs. Tinubu called on religious leaders to prioritize peace and emulate the example of Christ by offering prayers for those in authority rather than condemning them.
Addressing the leadership challenges across Africa, she expressed concern over the many difficulties facing governance on the continent.
“To our spiritual leaders, I implore you to promote peace, development, and to continue praying for our government. We must avoid the temptation to curse, insult, or vilify the government. Instead, let us speak truthfully to those in power and to the conscience of our citizens,” she said.
Mrs. Tinubu further urged religious figures not to assume divine authority, emphasizing that “God can use anyone to accomplish His purpose and fulfill His will on earth.” She noted that Africa stands at a critical juncture, grappling with numerous issues that demand effective leadership.
“As Christian leaders, we should adopt a leadership model grounded in the values of justice, integrity, wisdom, and social harmony, reflecting the teachings of Jesus Christ,” she concluded.
