On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden ordered the American military to bolster Israel’s defense systems and intercept missiles targeting the country, following a dramatic escalation in the Middle East conflict.

In a statement from the White House, it was confirmed that both President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were closely monitoring the unfolding situation from the White House situation room.

“President Biden has directed the U.S. military to assist Israel in defending against Iranian missile attacks and to intercept missiles aimed at Israel,” the statement read.

The situation took a dire turn when missile launches from Iran toward Israel were confirmed by both the Israeli military and Iranian state media. These strikes, which targeted major Israeli cities such as Tel Aviv, marked a significant escalation in hostilities between the two nations.

The missile attacks were reportedly in retaliation for the deaths of two high-profile leaders—Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas’ Ismail Haniyeh. Nasrallah was killed in Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon, while Haniyeh died in a bombing in Tehran, an attack widely attributed to Israeli forces.

As air raid sirens echoed across Israel, the nation’s air defense systems engaged to intercept the incoming missiles. Explosions were reported in several cities, including Jerusalem. Israel promptly closed its airspace in response to the threat, with neighboring Iraq and Jordan following suit by shutting down their own airspaces.

This latest escalation follows earlier Israeli ground operations in southern Lebanon, where strikes were aimed at Iranian-backed militants. The rising tensions had already prompted discussions between Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, which led to the deployment of additional American troops to the region.

As the conflict intensifies, international leaders, including Russia and China, are calling for restraint and de-escalation. The United Nations has also raised alarms over a worsening humanitarian crisis, with thousands displaced and casualties mounting. Despite these calls for calm, the violence continues, heightening fears of a broader regional conflict.
