The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the upcoming September 21 election in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo, has pledged to concede defeat if the election is conducted fairly and he does not emerge victorious.
During an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Monday, Ighodalo expressed confidence in his chances of winning but emphasized his commitment to accepting the outcome, provided the process is transparent.
“If we lose this election and we know we lost it fairly and squarely, I will be the first to concede,” Ighodalo stated. However, he added, “I know we cannot lose this election if the playing field is levelled.”
Ighodalo urged the people of Edo State to turn out en masse to cast their votes, reassuring them that their safety would be guaranteed throughout the electoral process. He underscored the importance of Edo citizens deciding the state’s next leader.
Reflecting on a personal moment, he shared a conversation with his daughter, saying, “The first question my daughter asked me the day I told her I am contesting. She said, ‘Daddy, you are not used to losing. I don’t think you have ever lost. If you lose this, how will you take it?'”
Ighodalo remains confident in his campaign’s rapport with Edo voters, stating, “We have related well with the people of Edo State. We told the people of Edo State what we will do for them, and they trust us. They will vote for us. I know at a level playing field, we will win.”
