In Zamfara State’s Zurmi Local Government Area, residents of Moriki town have successfully negotiated with the notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, to reduce his ransom demand from ₦50 million to ₦30 million.

This ransom is allegedly intended as compensation for the deaths of Turji’s cattle, which were reportedly killed by the new commander of the local Army base.

Households in Moriki have been instructed to contribute ₦10,000 each, while unmarried individuals are required to pay ₦2,000. Despite assurances from the commander that Turji’s livestock would not be harmed again, the villagers, fearing potential violence, have chosen to proceed with the payment.

According to Daily Post, residents are concerned that failing to meet Turji’s demands could provoke him into further violent acts, heightening their vulnerability. Meanwhile, around 15 local politicians and social activists remain in Turji’s captivity, having been abducted from the area despite the military presence.
