Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has revealed the reason behind naming the newly established Edo Arena after Benin-born musician Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema.

The announcement came during a groundbreaking ceremony held on Wednesday in Benin, where Rema and Governor Obaseki together laid the foundation stone for the venue.

Rema’s involvement in the ceremony coincided with his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium. Governor Obaseki praised Rema as a proud ambassador of Benin and Edo State, stating that renaming the arena to “Rema Dome” is intended to attract both visitors and international celebrities to the city.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Governor Obaseki expressed his enthusiasm: “It was an honor to have our global music icon @heisrema join me for the groundbreaking of the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, now named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.”

He emphasized that the Rema Dome would provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the rich cultural heritage of Edo State and generate employment for local youth.

The Governor reiterated his administration’s dedication to enhancing the state’s tourism potential and attracting investment, affirming that such initiatives are central to his vision for Edo’s development.
