The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest and detention of the whistleblower known as PIDOM, who was reported missing on Friday.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made the announcement in a statement released on Saturday.
PIDOM, a prominent social media whistleblower, has been known for leaking classified government and security agency memos in efforts to expose corruption. His disappearance had sparked widespread concern among Nigerians and human rights activists, including former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, who criticized the police for pursuing him.
In the statement, Adejobi revealed that the individual behind the PIDOM handle, Isaac Bristol Tamunobiefiri, was apprehended in a hotel in Rivers State on August 5, 2024, by officials from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC).
“In a well-coordinated operation, officers arrested Bristol Isaac Tamunobiefiri, also known as PIDOM, on serious charges related to activities that undermine government operations,” Adejobi stated.
He further explained that the allegations against Bristol include the unlawful possession and leakage of classified documents, as well as other cyber-related offenses. Adejobi assured the public that the police would conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
“There are multiple allegations against the suspect, including the unauthorized possession and dissemination of classified information, along with other cyber-related crimes. We are committed to conducting a diligent investigation to ensure justice is served,” he added.
Adejobi emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to upholding the law and ensuring the security of the nation. “We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to enforce the law and contribute to a more secure Nigeria,” he concluded.
