Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has voiced his concerns regarding the significant losses his businesses have suffered due to the current economic policies of President Bola Tinubu.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain also mentioned that he has faced humiliation from government apparatuses and is not exempt from the economic hardships caused by federal policies.

In a video posted on his X handle on Thursday, Senator Kalu appealed to Nigerian youths to refrain from protesting against the government’s policies. He expressed confidence that President Tinubu is committed to resolving the economic issues and would not let the citizens continue to suffer from hunger and hardship.

“People like me have built businesses and suffered in this economy. I have endured losses and humiliation caused by government apparatus, yet I still believe in the unity and oneness of our country. I am hopeful that Tinubu will address these issues. He will not leave us hungry,” Kalu said.

The former governor of Abia State advised Nigerians against following the example of Kenyan youths. He acknowledged that while protest is essential for democracy, it can be detrimental to economic development.

Kalu, who also served as the Chief Whip of the 9th Senate, noted that President Tinubu inherited a struggling economy that requires time to fix. He emphasized that the President is aware of the citizens’ suffering and is unhappy about it.

Senator Kalu called on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and all unions to abandon the planned protest in August. He urged Nigerians to give President Tinubu more time to address the country’s economic challenges.

“I know times are tough, but now is not the time for protests. While protests may benefit our democracy, they are not expedient for our economic development,” Kalu explained.

“I appeal to all CSOs, youths, and those considering protests like those in Kenya to reconsider. Give President Tinubu some more time; it is too early to judge his actions. No president is happy when citizens are suffering, and I am convinced Tinubu is working on it,” he added.

Senator Kalu also highlighted the heavy cost of replacing damaged infrastructure and urged for patience. “The oil money is not flowing as it used to. Tinubu is not the owner of the country and will eventually return to Lagos. Let’s give him some time; it is challenging to resolve economic issues within a few years,” he concluded.
