The Edo State Government has strongly criticized Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor, accusing him of orchestrating violence through a group of thugs targeting innocent citizens and private property in Benin City.

This follows a Federal High Court’s decision in Abuja to nullify Shaibu’s impeachment and reinstate him to office.

The court’s ruling instructed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to reinstate Shaibu’s full security detail. However, the state government swiftly appealed the decision and sought a Stay of Execution pending further legal proceedings.

Despite the pending appeal, Shaibu returned to Edo State on Thursday, sparking clashes between his supporters and those of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, issued a statement warning Shaibu about the consequences of his actions. He condemned the violence allegedly perpetrated by Shaibu and his associates under the guise of enforcing the court’s reinstatement order.

“The Edo State Government has observed the significant destruction caused by thugs associated with former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, purportedly enforcing a court judgment reinstating him,” Nehikhare stated.

He emphasized that Shaibu must refrain from using violence to assert his return to office, reminding him of his accountability under the law for any damages caused during these incidents. Nehikhare highlighted Shaibu’s history of alleged violent behavior, noting warnings from prominent community figures, including the Benin Monarch, against such actions.

“We reiterate that Shaibu will face legal consequences for any violence perpetrated in his pursuit to reclaim the Edo State Government House, despite the pending Stay of Execution,” Nehikhare added.

The statement concluded with an appeal for calm among the public, assuring that the government would uphold law and order in the state amidst heightened tensions.
