The Kano State House of Assembly has approved the Kano State Emirates Council Establishment Bill 2024, with the bill passing its third reading on Tuesday.
The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello Bututu, who represents the Rimin Gado/Tofa constituency, outlines the establishment of Kano as a first-class emirate, along with the creation of second-class emirates in Rano, Gaya, and Karaye.
Under the new legislation, the Emirs of Rano, Gaya, and Karaye will report to the Emir of Kano and will have the authority to advise him on matters such as maintaining public order, resolving boundary disputes, and addressing conflicts within their jurisdictions.
The Rano Emirate will encompass the Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya local government areas; the Gaya Emirate will include Gaya, Albasu, and Ajingi LGAs; and the Karaye Emirate will consist of Karaye and Rogo LGAs.
This legislative move aims to streamline the administrative structure and enhance the governance framework within the Kano State emirates. Further details are expected to emerge as the implementation of the bill progresses.
