The Nasarawa State chapter of the Labour Party has expressed strong solidarity with Julius Abure, the embattled National Chairman of the party, amidst ongoing disagreements with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Alexander Ombugu, the state party Chairman, asserted that Abure is facing opposition due to his transparent leadership style.
Speaking to journalists in Lafia, the state capital, Ombugu emphasized the unwavering support of the party’s leaders and members in Nasarawa State for Abure’s leadership.
“We stand firmly behind our National Chairman, Julius Abure,” Ombugu stated. “Some individuals oppose him because of his transparency and effectiveness as a leader. We admire his leadership and remain steadfast in our support for him.”
Ombugu expressed disappointment with the NLC’s stance against Abure, highlighting Abure’s achievements and efforts to elevate the Labour Party’s profile.
“We are surprised by the discord with the NLC. Instead of disagreements, efforts should focus on supporting Abure to advance the party,” Ombugu remarked.
He also endorsed a recent Supreme Court ruling granting autonomy to the 774 Local Government Areas, seeing it as pivotal for strengthening grassroots democracy. Ombugu urged the federal government to ensure that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) oversees local government elections for transparency and fairness.
Regarding local elections, Ombugu criticized the State Independent Electoral Commissions for alleged bias and advocated for INEC’s involvement to enhance electoral integrity.
“We appeal for INEC to take over chairmanship and councillorship elections, allowing voters to choose their leaders freely,” Ombugu added.
Ombugu concluded by welcoming new members into the Labour Party fold in Nasarawa State and urged existing members across the 13 LGAs to remain committed to achieving electoral success in both state and federal elections in 2027.
