Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has established a committee to oversee the transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Ondo State Government.
This move is part of a broader initiative aimed at achieving energy independence and improving electricity supply in the state.
The committee’s primary responsibilities include devising strategies to enhance the electricity supply, ensuring a seamless transition of authority from federal to state institutions, and strengthening local governance over electricity for the benefit of Ondo State residents.
During the announcement at the governor’s office in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted the importance of this transition for the state’s development. “This committee is a vital step towards achieving our goal of a more efficient and locally controlled electricity regulatory market. By taking charge of our regulatory framework, we can better address the unique needs of our state and ensure a more reliable and sustainable power supply for our citizens. Having a substantial part of Ondo State in darkness is simply unacceptable,” he stated.
The transition is expected to streamline regulatory procedures, enhance transparency, and ultimately improve the provision and distribution of electricity in Ondo State. The committee will work closely with various stakeholders, including NERC and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), to ensure a smooth and efficient transition.
Tunji Ariyomo will lead the committee as Chairman, with Engr. Johnson Alabi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, serving as Vice Chairman. Other members include former Regional Head of BEDC Iyabo Adefemi, Director of Planning at the Ondo State Power Company (OSPC) Engr. Olumayowa Ajumobi, and State Coordinator of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB) Engr. Stephen Bolawole, who will serve as Secretary. Engr. Gbenga Akeju will represent the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on the committee, while BEDC has been instructed to appoint a representative.
