The Vanguard for Credible Representation, a civil society organization based in Abuja, has called on former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to appear in court and address allegations of N80.2 billion fraud levied against him.
This follows the Federal High Court in Abuja’s decision in May to reject Bello’s attempt to halt the trial initiated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Bello had sought to suspend the trial before Justice Emeka Nwite, arguing that an ongoing appeal regarding a contempt application against EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukayode, should be resolved first. However, Justice Nwite denied Bello’s request, submitted by his lawyer, Abdulwahab Mohammed, emphasizing that the application could not be considered in the absence of the defendant.
Justice Nwite further stated that the trial could only proceed with the defendant present in court. Following several unsuccessful attempts to apprehend Bello and his repeated non-appearances for arraignment, the EFCC declared him wanted, and the Nigerian Immigration Service placed him on a watchlist.
On Tuesday, Akinloye Oyeniyi, Coordinator of the Vanguard for Credible Representation, issued a statement urging Bello to attend court and defend himself against the charges.
“We observe that this issue has caused significant unnecessary controversy. It is a straightforward matter of addressing allegations and proving innocence. However, we see the court almost pleading for the defendant’s appearance despite its previous rulings. This situation is unfortunate and unwarranted,” Oyeniyi stated.
The group encouraged Bello to take advantage of the next court date, June 13, 2024, to present his case and demonstrate his commitment to the judiciary and his integrity.
“Alongside other Nigerians, organizations, and the court, we also urge Alhaji Yahaya Bello to appear in court to clear his name, which is crucial,” Oyeniyi added.
