Former Nigerian Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has affirmed his determination to continue contesting for the presidency as long as he remains alive and healthy. In an interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America, Atiku reiterated his commitment to his political ambitions.
When asked if he plans to run again, Atiku responded, “Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy. Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning.”
Atiku, who will be 81 by the next presidential election in 2027, acknowledged the challenges within his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and emphasized the need for strong support and collaboration with other parties to secure an electoral victory. “Given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single-handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required,” he stated.
Atiku has sought the presidency six times, appearing on the ballot as a presidential candidate in 2007, 2019, and 2023. Despite previous setbacks, his unwavering resolve underscores his enduring presence in Nigeria’s political landscape.
