Suspected Fulani herdsmen launched a brutal attack on Sunday night in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals. The incident underscores the escalating tensions in the region and the pressing need for heightened security measures.

The victims, identified as Agness Salahu, 28, and Ademu Efugoga, 25, were ambushed between the Egba and Ogbaulu communities around 6 PM while returning from a local event.

Confirming the heartbreaking incident, Barrister Napoleon Otache, a cousin of the deceased, expressed profound grief and frustration over the prevailing security situation. “Agatu is under siege,” he lamented to Daily Post, highlighting the continuous assaults perpetrated by what he described as “Fulani terrorists.” He emphasized the absence of adequate security presence, leaving the local population vulnerable to unchecked violence.

The distress in Agatu is palpable as residents mourn the loss of life and grapple with the ongoing threat to their safety.

Otache urgently called for federal intervention, stating, “This insecurity in our land has assumed a dangerous dimension. Help from the federal government is urgently needed as Agatu and the broader Apa enclave remain under siege.”

Efforts to obtain comments from the Benue State Police were unsuccessful. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, did not respond to inquiries regarding the attack.

The incident has once again brought to the forefront the dire need for enhanced security measures in Benue State to curb the incessant attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen and ensure the safety and protection of residents.
