The Federal Government has refuted circulating reports suggesting that ransom was paid to secure the release of 137 schoolchildren abducted from the Kuriga community in Chikun Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State.
Addressing State House correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the government’s stance against paying ransom for abducted victims’ release.
Idris commended the National Security Adviser (NSA) and service chiefs for their efforts in securing the release of the abducted schoolchildren. He also highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s directive to security agencies to intensify efforts in combating kidnapping nationwide.
“As promised by Mr. President, they have been rescued. No ransom was paid,” stated the minister.
He further reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring the cessation of kidnappings and the punishment of perpetrators. The abduction occurred on March 7 when bandits attacked schools in the Kuriga community, Chikun LGA.
The Federal Government’s denial of ransom payment comes amidst ongoing efforts to address the menace of kidnapping and enhance security measures across the country.
