The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has accused Tukur Mamu, a Kaduna-based publisher and media aide to Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi, of involvement in terrorism financing. Mamu is one of 15 individuals and entities listed by the NFIU for alleged ties to terror groups.
According to the NFIU, Mamu played a role in financing terrorism by handling over $200,000 in ransom payments to ISIS-affiliated group ISWAP in exchange for the release of hostages taken during the Abuja-Kaduna train attack in March 2022.
Mamu is currently on trial for allegedly aiding the attackers. He was arrested in 2022 with $300,000 in his possession, which authorities claim were “terrorist funds.” The NFIU also accuses Mamu of exchanging communications with a Boko Haram spokesperson regarding the Abuja-Kaduna train hostages.
Mamu denies all allegations of terrorism financing or allegiance to any terrorist group.
