In a poignant session on Tuesday, the Senate has emphatically urged the Federal Government to promptly compensate the families of the 16 army officers and soldiers who tragically lost their lives in Delta State.
The solemn request transpired during the Senate’s proceedings, where senators observed a minute of silence in solemn tribute to the fallen military personnel who perished last Thursday in Okuama Community, Delta State.
Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, moved a motion of urgent importance during the session, emphasizing the imperative for an immediate investigation into the killing of the Nigerian Army personnel.
Following the adoption of the motion, the Senate directed the Committees on Army, Navy, and Defence to collaborate with the Nigerian Army to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
Additionally, the Red Chamber implored the federal government to ensure that those responsible for the reprehensible act are identified, apprehended, and subjected to the full consequences of their actions through a fair and transparent legal process.
The tragic incident occurred in the Okuama community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, where 16 Nigerian Army officers and soldiers were killed while on a peace mission.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), in a statement issued on Monday, disclosed that the slain army personnel included the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 12 other personnel from the battalion.
DHQ further released the names and ranks of the deceased officers and soldiers, underscoring the gravity of the loss suffered by the nation’s military community.
