The Presidency has refuted claims suggesting a political vendetta against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, amidst recent developments. Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, made this assertion in a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo.

Ngelale dismissed the notion of political vendetta against Emefiele, emphasizing that it would be misplaced to assume such motives. He pointed out that Emefiele didn’t participate in political primaries, making him an unlikely target for political vendetta.

The denial comes amid the Federal Government’s decision to levy 14 fresh charges against Emefiele, stemming from allegations of corruption. These charges, based on findings from a comprehensive report submitted by a special investigator, include serious offenses such as criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to conduct forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The legal battle surrounding Emefiele’s tenure as CBN Governor has intensified with these new allegations, following his removal from office by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023.

In addition to the federal charges, the Nigerian Senate has initiated a probe into the management and expenditure of the N30 trillion Ways and Means loans facilitated by the CBN during Emefiele’s governorship. This investigation aims to uncover how these funds were acquired and utilized under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Preliminary findings suggest that the alleged “reckless spending” of the loans has contributed significantly to the nation’s current food and security crises.

The unfolding developments underscore the heightened scrutiny surrounding Emefiele’s tenure and the broader implications for Nigeria’s financial and political landscape.
