In a bold move to address the mounting economic challenges faced by Nigerians, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, spearheaded protests across various locations in Abuja on Tuesday.

The demonstrations come amidst rising concerns over the escalating cost of living and general economic hardships gripping the nation.

The NLC had previously declared Tuesday, February 27th, and Wednesday, February 28th, as days for nationwide protests, highlighting grievances related to the implementation of the fuel subsidy removal policy and the floating of the naira. Additionally, the union accused the federal government of reneging on agreements reached in October 2023.

Despite a last-minute meeting between the NLC and representatives of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government, which ended in a deadlock on Monday night, the labour union remained resolute in proceeding with the planned protests.

Among those present at the meeting were notable figures such as the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN); Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha; Minister for Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; Minister of Budget and Planning, Atiku Bagudu; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and Head of Service, Folasade Yemi Esan. Representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress also attended.

Following the meeting, NLC President Joe Ajaero reaffirmed the union’s commitment to proceeding with the planned protests, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the grievances of Nigerian workers and citizens.

Earlier, the NLC had issued a stern warning, threatening to shut down services nationwide in the event of any attacks on its members during the protests.
