In response to the growing scarcity and food deprivation within Niger State, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has taken decisive action by imposing a ban on the sale and distribution of food items and farm produce in bulk from the state to other regions.
The announcement of this ban was made during a press briefing, where Governor Bago emphasized the detrimental effects of bulk sales on local food availability. He highlighted concerns that such practices have exacerbated food shortages within the state.
Governor Bago issued a stern warning, stating that any individual or entity found violating the ban would face severe consequences. Trucks engaged in the bulk purchase or transportation of foodstuffs from local markets will be intercepted and their cargoes confiscated. The confiscated food items will then be distributed among the people of Niger State to alleviate food insecurity.
“Trucks who come to pack or buy foodstuffs from our villagers in bulk should be halted for now. We have stopped mass purchases from our local markets, all our local governments, from now henceforth,” declared Governor Bago, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
The decision to implement this ban comes at a time of widespread economic hardship across Nigeria. The devaluation of the Naira has led to a significant increase in the cost of food items nationwide, further exacerbating the challenges faced by ordinary citizens.
