The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has urged President Bola Tinubu to relieve underperforming cabinet members of their duties in response to the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria. Abbas made this call during the resumption of plenary on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for new strategies to address the widespread insecurity that poses a threat to the nation’s stability.

Expressing concern over the unabated security situation, Abbas lamented that despite various measures employed to tackle the challenges, they have persisted. The Speaker called for innovative approaches to address the security crisis, stating, “The threats of insurgency are severely testing the peace and stability of our country, with the rise in kidnapping for ransom and unsettling unrest across all six geo-political zones.”

Highlighting the hardships faced by families and communities affected by the security challenges, Abbas called on President Tinubu to demand greater performance and accountability from service chiefs and all security and enforcement agencies. He urged the President not to shy away from making tough decisions and emphasized the necessity of enacting changes within the security apparatus if deemed necessary.

“Greater performance and accountability from our service chiefs and all security and enforcement agencies. I implore the President not to shy away from making the tough decisions. If necessary, we must not hesitate to enact changes within our security apparatus, for the cost of inaction is far too great to bear.”

Abbas stressed the high cost of inaction and the importance of taking decisive measures to address the security issues plaguing the nation. The call for a reassessment of the security apparatus reflects the growing concern over the persistent challenges and the need for effective strategies to ensure the safety and stability of Nigeria.
