The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has shed light on the factors contributing to the recent nationwide reduction in electricity supply. According to Adelabu, the primary cause of the drop in power generation is the constraints faced by thermal generating companies due to decreased gas supply.
In a statement released on Friday by Bolaji Tunji, the special adviser for strategic communication and media relations to the Minister of Power, Adelabu acknowledged the challenges faced by the power sector and assured the public that the federal government is actively working to address the issues.
Adelabu stated, “This is mainly due to a decreased gas supply to generation companies. This situation has led to a lower level of energy supplied to load centres, affecting the electricity supply to distribution companies.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving outstanding payments to power generation companies, with the aim of improving the electricity supply across the country.
The Minister’s announcement comes after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed the decline in bulk power supply to gas constraints. In response, Electricity Distribution Companies nationwide issued apologies to consumers for the reduction in power supply.
Adelabu expressed understanding of the situation’s unsustainability and assured a swift turnaround in resolving the challenges faced by the power sector. The government’s efforts to address gas constraints and outstanding payments aim to ensure an improvement in electricity supply, allowing distribution companies to meet the energy needs of Nigerians.
