The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) took to the streets on Monday to protest the ongoing spate of killings in Plateau State and other parts of the country. Led by notable Christian leaders, including the state’s CAN chairman, Rev. Polycarp Lubo, and other prominent figures, the protest named the “Plateau Peace Walk” aimed to express dissatisfaction with the current security situation.
The demonstration commenced at Jos’ PRTVC Roundabout and proceeded to the Rayfield Government House.
Meanwhile, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State issued a warning, stating that if immediate action is not taken to address the persistent violence, Nigeria could face a situation similar to war-torn Somalia. During a discussion with former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Governor Mutfwang expressed deep concern over the prolonged cycle of violence. Dogara led a delegation to visit the governor following the tragic massacre of over 200 people in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas.
Governor Mutfwang urged critical leaders to join forces in addressing the root causes of the violence and proposing effective solutions. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to prevent the escalation of the crisis and avoid a scenario where people resort to self-help, potentially turning Nigeria into another Somalia. Despite the challenges, the governor acknowledged a desire for change and a commitment to ending the violence from the current president.
The ongoing protests and discussions reflect the urgent need for comprehensive efforts to bring about peace, justice, and stability in Plateau State and other regions facing security challenges in Nigeria.
