In a startling turn of events, convicted offender Deobra Delone Redden physically assaulted Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus during a hearing after she denied him bail.
The incident, which unfolded on Wednesday, saw Redden abruptly rising from his position, leaping onto the judge’s bench, and tackling her. The shocking scene was captured in a video uploaded by Reuters on Thursday.
Courtroom witnesses revealed to The Independent that a courtroom marshal sustained injuries, including a dislocated shoulder and a severe cut on his forehead while attempting to remove Redden.
The Las Vegas district court released a statement commending the heroic acts of the staff, law enforcement, and others involved in subduing the defendant. The court expressed a commitment to reviewing protocols to ensure the safety and security of the judiciary, the public, and employees.
Judge Holthus reportedly sustained injuries from the assault, and her condition is currently under observation. The Nevada attorney general’s office extended best wishes for her recovery and that of the injured court marshal.
Following his arrest, Redden faces multiple new felony charges, including violence on a protected person, encompassing the judge and court staff. The altercation occurred after he assaulted the judge during a sentencing for aggravated battery with substantial bodily harm.
Despite undergoing a mental evaluation and being found fit to stand trial, Redden boldly advanced towards the judge. State records indicate Redden’s history of periods of incarceration in Nevada due to a previous domestic battery conviction.
The incident with Judge Holthus comes after Redden had previously faced accusations of property destruction when appearing before her, according to court documents detailed by The US Sun.
