As the Supreme Court prepares to deliver its verdict on the highly contested Kano state governorship election, supporters of major political parties in the state are turning to prayers and Quranic recitations, hoping for a favorable outcome.
The current Governor of Kano State and candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Abba Yusuf, has taken his appeal to the Supreme Court following the Court of Appeal’s decision, which favored the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasiru Gawuna.
Expressing confidence in the judicial process, Faruk Kuwa, the chairman of NADA and a member of the NNPP, stated, “We believe that the judges in this Supreme Court will do justice and confirm to the people of Kano what they have chosen, this is the center of democracy. So we hope that the people will be assured of what they have chosen.”
On the APC side, Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, the secretary of APC in Kano state, conveyed their reliance on prayers and confidence in the evidence presented in court. Sarina mentioned, “We prayed, we went to the court, and God is sufficient, and the court will not ignore the evidence and reasons we presented, so we believe that success is with them.”
The Court of Appeal in Abuja had previously dismissed Governor Yusuf’s appeal against the ruling of the Election Appeal Court, which declared Gawuna of the APC as the winner of the March 18 governorship election.
The impending Supreme Court ruling holds significant importance not only for Kano state but for the entire nation, as Kano is recognized as a political hub in northern Nigeria.
Both the NNPP and APC have affirmed their commitment to respecting the decision of the Supreme Court, emphasizing the paramount need to maintain peace and stability in Kano state.
