The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has revealed that discussions are underway to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu from detention. This update was shared by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, in a statement from Abuja.

The Supreme Court recently ordered a retrial for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), who has been detained for an extended period, leading to widespread agitation, including the Sit-at-Home protests observed on Mondays in the southeast region.

Speaking on FLO FM’s “South East Political Roundtable,” Kalu emphasized the need to halt the Sit-at-Home observance due to its negative impact on attracting investors to the southeast. He also discussed the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P) launched in Abia State’s Bende Local Government Area, urging individuals involved in armed activities to embrace this non-kinetic approach to resolving security challenges and other regional grievances.

Kalu appealed for support to enable President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to achieve its goals, particularly in the development of the southeast, affirming the President’s interest in the region’s progress.

Addressing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, Kalu stated, “We are working underground. There’s a detailed strategy. It’s not by violence; you can’t coerce the government through violence. It has never worked and won’t work. Let’s be wiser. The wisdom is in peace. Let’s quench the violence.”

He encouraged the southeast community to embrace peaceful strategies and refrain from activities that may hinder the region’s development. Kalu highlighted the significance of unity and peaceful engagement to address challenges and promote progress.

The Deputy Speaker also appreciated the support of the governors of the five eastern states for the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), emphasizing that the initiative is not politically motivated but a community service project aimed at fostering peace and development.

Kalu assured the community that the Peace In South East Project is a collaborative effort with leaders and stakeholders, including Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo, dispelling any notions of a clash of interest.

In his call for unity and a collective approach to challenges, Kalu emphasized that through peaceful initiatives, the southeast could witness positive transformations, economic growth, and opportunities for gainful employment for the youth, moving away from violence and promoting a more prosperous future.
