In a poignant personal statement, President Bola Tinubu expresses deep sorrow over the untimely passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, whom he fondly refers to as a beloved brother, confidant, and political soulmate. Acknowledging the difficulty of eulogizing a younger soul, Tinubu reflects on Akeredolu’s indelible impact on the nation.

Rotimi Akeredolu, a man known for advocating equity, fairness, and justice, is portrayed as a stalwart figure who utilized the law, serving as a Senior Advocate, Attorney-General, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, and Governor of Ondo State, to champion justice in the country.

In the face of challenges, particularly during moments of insecurity in the nation, Akeredolu emerged as a strong advocate, urging a reevaluation of the security architecture, leading to the establishment of local police in the South West.

Tinubu fondly remembers Akeredolu as a man of ideas and action, emphasizing his unwavering dedication during his six-year tenure as Governor. Akeredolu’s service is lauded for the numerous infrastructure projects, including roads, schools, and healthcare facilities, that have left a lasting impact on Ondo State.

During dark hours, such as the tragic attack on the Catholic Church in Owo, Akeredolu’s leadership qualities as a statesman and compassionate leader shone brightly. Tinubu describes him as a mourner-in-chief, guiding his people through agonizing periods.

The personal journey shared between Tinubu and Akeredolu as members of the progressive family is depicted as one marked by shared battles to restore progressive governance in the South West, Edo State, and Nigeria. Tinubu commends Akeredolu’s uncommon courage as a member of their legal team in battles to reclaim stolen mandates.

As Tinubu mourns the loss of a friend, associate, brother, and soulmate, he extends condolences to Akeredolu’s wife, Betty, and Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. The president urges them to take heart during this national tragedy.

The passing of Governor Akeredolu is acknowledged as a significant blow to the governing APC and the broader progressive family, leaving an irreplaceable void. Tinubu expresses hope that Aiyedatiwa, as the successor, will steadfastly uphold the vision of governance left by this towering political leader.
