The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a warning to Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, cautioning against the implementation of the peace deal initiated by President Bola Tinubu between him and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, concerning the crisis in the state.
Governor Fubara had, in a broadcast on Monday, expressed commitment to implementing the resolution brokered by Tinubu, emphasizing its potential to bring lasting peace to the state. However, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) has criticized Fubara’s plan to implement the peace deal.
In an interview with Punch, the Deputy National Youth Leader of the PDP, Timothy Osadolor, highlighted the constitutional nature of the issues at stake, stating that the question of the vacant seats of defected lawmakers is a clear constitutional matter. He emphasized that the ownership of votes lies with the PDP constitutionally and cannot be dictated by Governor Fubara or President Tinubu.
Osadolor underscored that the PDP is currently pursuing legal action in this regard, asserting the party’s right to its votes. He clarified that Governor Fubara’s role is limited to paying salaries and allowances to lawmakers until the date their seats become vacant.
The PDP representative concluded by affirming that the constitutional issues involved in the crisis are beyond the scope of the governor and President Tinubu, urging adherence to established legal processes.
The warning from the PDP comes as tensions persist over the political situation in Rivers State and the aftermath of the peace deal facilitated by President Bola Tinubu.
