Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has expressed criticism towards President Bola Tinubu’s recent announcement of a 50% reduction in transportation fares nationwide during the Yuletide season. Tinubu had declared waivers on transport fares for interstate road travelers during Christmas and New Year, with the federal government bearing half of the expenses for interstate road travelers.

In response to this initiative, Obi, using his official handle, conveyed his disappointment and raised concerns about the fate of Nigerians after the festive season. He questioned the inclusivity of the policy and its impact on those who had already undertaken their travels before the announcement.

In a statement shared on Friday, Obi acknowledged the potential benefits of the government’s intervention but underscored the need for sustainable measures beyond the holiday season. He questioned whether there was a comprehensive policy in place to address the persistently high transportation costs faced by citizens.

“The major concern about such emergency measures is what follows afterward. The high cost of transportation and associated hardships are all well known. The question this seasonal palliative raises is that of what happens after the festive season. Is there a sustainable policy measure to cushion the masses from the current high transportation costs?” Obi stated in his release.

He also raised practical concerns about the implementation of the policy, particularly for those who had already incurred significant travel expenses before the announcement. Obi emphasized the necessity for clear arrangements with transport companies and expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the intervention.

While recognizing the effort as a step in the right direction, Obi called for transparency and concrete plans to ensure the intended benefits reach the broad masses, especially the less privileged.

The statement reflects ongoing debates and discussions surrounding the effectiveness and long-term impact of government interventions, especially during festive seasons, in addressing the economic challenges faced by the populace.
