Rivers APC Caretaker Committee Denies Minister Nyesom Wike’s Involvement in Lawmakers’ Defection

In a recent political upheaval in Rivers State, the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has categorically denied any connection between Minister Nyesom Wike and the mass defection of 27 state lawmakers.

This substantial shift in allegiance has significantly altered the state’s political landscape, as a majority of the lawmakers switched from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

Party leaders, including Secretary Eric Nwibani, have swiftly dismissed speculations regarding Wike’s involvement, asserting that such claims are mere speculation. Nwibani emphasized that the defectors are capable of speaking for themselves, refuting any insinuations about external influences. He remarked, “Every political party is interested in numbers. You see it reflected in the defection of the Rivers House of Assembly. I am talking about 27 of them.”

Nwibani further expressed the party’s eagerness to welcome additional members, stating, “If the remaining four lawmakers can come and join us, we will be very happy. We also want members of other political parties to join us to make Rivers State better than it is today under the PDP. Politics is a game of numbers. We are interested in as many persons that want to join the party. We will welcome everybody.”

Chibuike Ikenga, the acting Spokesman for the Rivers APC committee, attributed the recent development to the party’s ongoing efforts to rebuild after the dissolution of the former executives. Ikenga stated, “It is a welcome development. We are happy that our ranks are being swollen by this movement. You will recall we said our doors are open to attract more purposeful and stronger elements who will help us rebuild the party ahead of the election. With this defection, we have just started reaping the fruits.”

During the reception of the defectors, Tony Okocha, the Chairman of Rivers APC, assured the newcomers that the party would accord them the same respect, treatment, and dignity enjoyed by every member in the state. The unfolding events mark a crucial chapter in the political dynamics of Rivers State, setting the stage for potential shifts and realignments in the lead-up to future elections.
