President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made his arrival at Expo City in Dubai for the 28th edition of the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP28) Summit. Welcomed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President Tinubu was also received by COP28 President Sultan Al-Jaber at the Summit venue.
Organized by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the conference is a crucial platform for global leaders to address and strategize on climate-related issues.
During the summit, President Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a national statement, articulating Nigeria’s position on key thematic issues such as renewable energy and climate financing. Recognizing the severe impact of climate change on Nigeria, including challenges like desertification, flooding, erosion, drought, and national security risks, President Tinubu aims to advocate for increased financial and technical support for developing nations.
The President is expected to remind developed countries of their commitment to providing $100 billion annually for localized initiatives addressing climate change-related challenges. His message will also emphasize the need for accountability in businesses and institutions, reflecting Nigeria’s dedication to sustainable and responsible practices.
The Nigerian delegation to COP28 will actively engage in exploring new and deeper bilateral partnerships. The focus areas include implementing Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation.
President Tinubu’s participation in the summit underscores Nigeria’s commitment to addressing climate change challenges and fostering international collaboration to achieve sustainable solutions. The outcomes of COP28 are expected to play a crucial role in shaping global strategies for mitigating climate change impacts.
