In a groundbreaking moment in Africa’s medical history, Safina Namukwaya, a 70-year-old woman from Masaka, Uganda, has given birth to twins—a boy and a girl. The extraordinary event unfolded at a medical facility in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, on Wednesday, marking a triumph over years of barrenness for Namukwaya.

Under the expert care of Dr. Edward Tamale Sali at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre, Namukwaya’s journey to motherhood reached an unexpected and joyous conclusion. The twins and their mother are reported to be in good health, further emphasizing the remarkable success of fertility treatment in this instance.

Namukwaya, who previously faced societal stigma and mockery, shared her overwhelming happiness at the arrival of the twins, especially given her age. Having lost her first husband in 1992 without bearing children, she found love again in 1996. Despite the challenges she faced, Namukwaya gave birth to a girl in 2020, challenging the perceptions of those who had labeled her as a “cursed woman.”

However, amid the celebration, Namukwaya expressed disappointment that her current partner has not visited her since the delivery. She speculated that his absence might be tied to the fear of the responsibilities associated with raising twins. In her own words, “Maybe he is not happy that I delivered twins because men don’t want to know you are carrying more than one child in a womb for fear of maybe responsibilities that come with that.”

This heartwarming story serves as a testament to the advancements in fertility treatments and the resilience of individuals like Namukwaya, who, against societal odds, find joy and fulfillment in unexpected miracles.
