A recent publication by a faction of the Labour Party (LP) has stirred mixed reactions, as it threatens to suspend its presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi.

The factional National Publicity Secretary of the party, Abayomi Arabambi, issued a statement on Tuesday, giving Peter Obi a 48-hour ultimatum to make all his academic records public and clarify discrepancies in his certificates, or face suspension by the party.

Arabambi condemned Tanko Yinusa, the spokesperson for the Peter Obi/Datti Ahmed presidential campaign council, for dismissing the allegations that Obi was impersonating his late elder brother as a farce. Arabambi raised several questions regarding the alleged discrepancies in Peter Obi’s academic records and identity, demanding answers to issues surrounding his certificates and identity.

Arabambi stated that Peter Obi must provide a satisfactory response to the allegations within the next 48 hours. Failure to do so would result in his suspension from the Labour Party.

The latest controversies come at a time when presidential candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, are challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s identity and Chicago State University academic records at the Supreme Court following their defeat in the February 25th presidential poll.

Nigerians have taken to social media to express their opinions on the matter, with varying perspectives. Some emphasize the need for transparency and verification of candidates’ documents, while others question the motives behind the allegations and suggest that this is a political ploy.

The situation has raised questions about the authenticity of political officeholders’ certificates, with some suggesting the need for a law mandating agencies like INEC, EFCC, and ICPC to verify the authenticity of certificates and take action against those found to have discrepancies or forged documents.

Peter Obi has previously addressed these allegations but is now facing renewed scrutiny. It remains to be seen how this situation will develop and what impact it may have on the upcoming elections.
