Popular Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye, has voiced his criticism of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma’s recent announcement regarding job opportunities in Europe and Canada for 4,000 indigenes of Imo State by December 2023.
Governor Uzodinma made this pledge during a campaign event leading up to the November 11 governorship election in the South Eastern State of Nigeria. He even went a step further by stating that he would cover the flight expenses for the selected individuals once they secured jobs abroad.
During his speech, Governor Uzodinma said, “I have gone further to negotiate with the European Union government and Canadian government. They are sending us special areas of skill which our youths will also learn, and by December this year, 4000 Imo youths will be employed in Europe. Once the employment letter drops, the governor will pay for your air ticket,” eliciting cheers from the crowd.
Peter Okoye, in response to the governor’s promises, took to his Instastories to express his disapproval, describing the governor’s comments as “ridiculous.” Okoye argued that it was a matter of shame for a governor, who is expected to create a conducive environment and job opportunities for his constituents, to make such assurances.
Governor Uzodinma’s pledge has stirred up a debate among Nigerians, with some applauding his efforts to address unemployment issues, while others, like Peter Okoye, are skeptical about the feasibility and sustainability of such promises. The comments by the singer underscore the importance of addressing unemployment through systemic reforms and job creation within the state.
