The government led by President Bola Tinubu has announced that an audit report of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will soon be available for the public to review, shedding light on the factors contributing to economic challenges in the country.
The Federal Government, addressing the nation’s issues, has pointed to governance as a primary source of Nigeria’s problems. President Tinubu’s decision to audit the CBN has received commendation from the government.
In July 2023, President Tinubu appointed Jim Obazee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, as the special investigator for the CBN. The investigator was tasked with examining the CBN and key Government Business Entities, reporting directly to the President’s office.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, addressed the media on Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary, emphasizing that Nigerians will soon have insights into the CBN’s operations and what led the nation to its current state. He stated, “Most of these problems confronting us are because of bad governance. The present government has confronted and is confronting these challenges. When President Bola Tinubu came on board, he made a very sound decision at the CBN. That singular act led to a massive improvement in the capital market, as experts have told us, it is something that can never happen in the past 15 years.”
Akume revealed that a new team has been put in place at the CBN, and the special investigator’s findings will be made public, providing clarity on the issues plaguing the nation.
Regarding Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary celebration, Akume noted that it would be a low-key event, in line with the country’s economic realities. The theme of the anniversary is “Nigeria @ 63, Renewed Hope for Unity & Prosperity.” Notably, no world leaders have been invited to the event, reflecting the government’s decision to keep the celebration modest.
