Tinubu Pleads With Nigerians To Bear The Pains Of Subsidy Removal

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has given its approval for a salary increment of 35% for academic staff and 23% for non-academic staff across all Federal Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria. Furthermore, the federal government will disburse arrears dating back to January 1, 2023, to the eligible personnel.

This vital decision was communicated through an official memorandum dated September 21, 2023, emanating from the office of the Auditor General of the Federation. The memo, bearing reference number OAuGF/Sw/C/QP/1395/VOL.1/II, was directed to the Directors of Audit, Heads of Department, and Heads of Units.

The salary enhancement, which impacts both academic and non-academic personnel, is particularly aimed at staff members of federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. The revised compensation structure, known as the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Salary Structure (CONPCASs), will come into effect on January 1, 2023, as stated in the memorandum.

“I am directed to inform you that the Presidential Committee on Salaries, during its 13th meeting, took into consideration various stages of collective bargaining in different sectors, including the engagements between the Federal Ministry of Education and Tertiary Institutions-based Unions. Consequently, the Federal Government’s approval is hereby conveyed as revised for the following: Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Salary Structure (CONPCASs) for Academic Staff of Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education with effect from 1 January, 2023,” a segment of the official letter read.

The decision to increase salaries for staff in Federal Tertiary Institutions is seen as a positive step towards improving the welfare and motivation of educators and support staff in these institutions. It also reflects the government’s commitment to addressing issues related to collective bargaining and the enhancement of conditions of service for workers in the education sector.

This move is expected to be welcomed by the academic and non-academic communities in Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, as they have long advocated for improved remuneration packages to recognize their dedication and contribution to the education system in Nigeria. The disbursement of arrears from January 1, 2023, will further alleviate financial concerns among these employees.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s decision to approve these salary increments underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive working environment in the education sector and supporting the growth and development of the nation’s educational institutions.
