Niger Coup: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Holds Meeting to Resolve Niger Republic’s Political Crisis

In an effort to address the ongoing political turmoil in Niger Republic, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also serves as the Chairman of the Authority of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has convened a high-level meeting with key stakeholders.

The meeting is aimed at finding a constructive resolution to the political crisis that has been gripping the nation.

The gathering, currently taking place in Abuja, Nigeria, has drawn the participation of prominent figures in the West African political landscape. Among those present are Dr Omar Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who is leading the ECOWAS delegation to engage with Niger Republic’s military junta. Also attending is Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser to the President.

As of the time of reporting, no official details have been disclosed regarding the discussions occurring within the meeting. Nonetheless, this assembly signifies a critical step forward in the collective effort to resolve the political crisis that has gripped Niger Republic in recent times.

In a related development, the African Union (AU) has taken decisive action in response to the continued detention of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum by the military junta. The AU has announced the suspension of the Republic of Niger from all its activities, citing concerns about the country’s political situation and the prolonged detention of President Bazoum.

The AU, in a statement issued on Tuesday, expressed deep regret over the military coup that occurred on July 26, which has plunged the nation into a state of turmoil for several weeks. The continental body urged the leaders of the coup to release President Bazoum immediately and return to their military barracks, reinforcing the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.

The situation in Niger Republic remains a matter of significant concern for both the ECOWAS and the AU, with efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution to the crisis gaining momentum. As stakeholders continue to engage in diplomatic discussions and negotiations, the hopes of restoring stability and democratic governance to the country remain at the forefront of regional and continental priorities.
