Abubakar Assumes Office As New Chief of Air Staff

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointments of service chiefs, who were nominated by President Bola Tinubu. It was a historical moment for the country, as these appointments held great significance in ensuring the safety and security of the nation.

The confirmation followed the screening by the Committee, which was presided over by the Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabío.

The lawmakers confirmed them after screening them in a closed session that lasted for more than an hour.

The Service Chiefs who were confirmed through voice votes are: Major General Christopher G Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, Major General T.A Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshal H. B. Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff.

Recall President Tinubu, in his address following the confirmation, expressed his utmost confidence in the newly appointed service chiefs. He emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among the armed forces to tackle the nation’s security challenges effectively.

Their appointment was contained in a statement released by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and made accessible by Mr. Willie Bassey, the office’s director of information.

The President also approved the appointment of DIG Kayode Egbetokun as Acting Inspector-General of Police and Adeniyi Bashir Adewale as Acting Comptroller General of Customs.

Tinubu wrote to the national assembly lastweek, seeking the confirmation of the service chiefs, premising his request on section 18(1) of the armed forces act. CAP A20 laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Before going for the screening, the service chiefs took turns to speak about their careers and how the country has grappled with security challenges as well as how they hope to mitigate them.

Lagbaja said he would work with other service chiefs in ensuring that the country is secured.

“I have identified some pillars on which my leadership will rest and that include sound leadership. I have identified and will work with my fellow service chiefs and other security agencies,” he said.

On his part, Ogalla, chief of naval staff, said: “I have served in various capacities. I wish to state that if given the opportunity to serve, as the chief of naval staff, I will give my best. I fully understand the challenges facing the navy.”

The confirmation of the new service chiefs had marked a turning point for the nation. It represented a commitment to strengthening the security apparatus and ensuring the well-being of the Nigerian people. Under their leadership, the country embarked on a journey towards a more peaceful and prosperous future.
